Free Guidance On Making the Move to Platform Engineering

Platform engineering is an increasingly popular topic of conversation in DevOps and software engineering circles, but what does it mean for DevOps, and how and when should your organization embrace it?

This report from analyst firm Omdia is for anyone who wants to:

  • better understand what platform engineering is and how it differs from DevOps;
  • learn how and why your organization's DevOps maturity will impact its ability to embrace platform engineering;
  • understand the five stages of DevOps maturity, what characterizes each, and what's required to move to the next level; and

Excerpt From the Report

"DevOps has been debated since the term was first coined in 2009. It continues to be a topic of much interest as IT departments look to improve the quality and reduce the cost of delivering change to the organization. While modern DevOps has focused on the agile development process and how it integrates with IT operations release processes, it has ignored the reality that many organizations are now multimodal regarding their IT estate. Operating a multimodal IT environment—where organizations support a wide range of IT delivery approaches, from mainframe to software as a service (SaaS) and now generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) development and deployment—introduces additional challenges for IT departments.

"Omdia considers that operating IT in this complex environment requires all the constituencies to be aligned and working toward a single strategic objective. The challenge is that the different delivery approaches have various teams, and very little cross-team collaboration occurs. DevOps was supposed to be a catalyst that helped introduce a more collaborative and sharing culture to the entire IT department. However, DevOps illuminated the behaviors and culture needed to improve service delivery by focusing on the tangible and obvious tensions between the agile development methodology and the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL)-based operational processes. Platform engineering is an evolution of some of the DevOps concepts designed to remove the inhibitors to greater collaboration that using DevOps in a multimodal environment illuminated."
